about me.
My name is Ruby Ferguson and I am currently studying a 5-year Masters Degree in Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art.
I previously studied a HNC in Contemporary Art Practice at West Lothian College, where I developed a strong foundation of creative practices and embraced my own research. Throughout my college project I have created a focus on my eyesight and specifically how my eyes have worsened dramatically over the last 10 years. It baffles me how such unique viewpoints can exist without any awareness from others on a daily basis. Therefore, researching not only my own circumstance but alternative perspectives and eye disorders has literally opened my eyes to the possibilities of Sight.

Using glass as a material I am continuing to draw connections between the delicate substance and my own eyesight. Glass embodies elements of fragility and once damaged is impossible to return to its original flawless appearance without cracks or damage. Symbolically, this idea of permanent damage mirrors my feeling towards my eyes deteriorating. Similarly, using Ice and its ability to melt and dissolve over time relates to my inability to freeze time and stop my eyes changing. Therefore, I have experimented with Ice during Performance work and also as a material to draw with. Additionally, developing an interest in Blueberries, not only for their visual similarities to my eyes but due to the proven health benefits of them. The antioxidants that are found in blueberries are proven to help slow the deterioration of eyesight. Therefore, including blueberries in my work has given me another avenue in which to express my chosen theme.

Communicating with customers and gaining insight into the fashion industry has also expanded my interest into a wider variety of artworks and opportunities.
